WELCOME TO OUR ONLINE LEARNING EXPERIENCE!
LESSON 1: Introduction to the concept of Incarceration/Prisons (April 8th- April 14th)
In this unit we will have guest speakers, such as Dr. Melissa Munn an expert on the subject of incarceration from Okanagan College. We will learn vocabulary and participate in debates on the purpose of incarceration and the penal system. We will also see some Prisons from Canada, the United States and many other countries.
One of the ongoing skills we've been developing in this course is "How to ask good questions." Here are some of the questions I asked as I designed this unit. Guiding Questions: A. What is the goal of the prison system (Rehabilitation, Restitution, Justice, Punishment) and which systems are successful? B. What would be the ideal prison (architecturally, in terms of programs, in terms of justice) C. Are there alternatives to Prisons? D. How do we as a society prevent recidivism and how do correctional facilities prevent recidivism? Reduce harm? Skills we will build: 1. Asking good questions 2. Having reasoned Discussions 3. Reading non-fiction text and responding to it 4. Researching and creating an inquiry ASSIGNMENT ONE: Answer the google form Mr. Fitton sent out - in it please write down any questions you want answered in this unit and Mr. Fitton will design the unit around student interests. *Assignments are denoted in red so they are easy to find. |
Let's Look at the Penal System!
This unit is meant to be provocative. Hopefully it will challenge some of your beliefs around incarceration.
We will examine documentaries, non-fiction articles, Hollywood Films and combine them with expert guest lecturers and digital field trips. By the end of this unit, you will see prisons in a different way. 1. Choose to watch ONE of the two provocative youtube videos on this site. A. "10 Worst Prisons in History" (Trigger warning; graphic content) OR B. 10 Most Dangerous Prisons in the World (Also some graphic content) Are these prisons based on retribution/punishment or on rehabilitation (growth and positive change) Retribution: Punishment to avenge a crime, ensuring the offenders suffer the consequences of their actions. Rehabilitation: Punishment combined with treatment and training to help offenders function in society. |

2. Please copy and paste the following link into your web browser to view a prison photo-essay: http://content.time.com/time/photogallery/0,29307,1989083,00.html
If you can't see it, I have also posted it below in a gallery.
This photo essay details a famous Norwegian Prison; the conceptualization of this type of prison is very different than the one we are usually aware of.

A Mini Lesson: TOPIC; INQUIRY QUESTION; THESIS
Students at times are curious about how to take a topic, turn it into an inquiry question and then develop a thesis.
Here are some examples:
Topic: Norwegian Prisons
Question: What system is better, Norways or Canada's?
Thesis: Norwegian prisons are superior to Canadian prisons in a variety of ways.
Topic: Gangs in Prisons
Question: Which gang is the most dangerous gang in Prison
Thesis: Of the many gangs which exist in prisons, the 3 most dangerous are the Aryan Brotherhood, The Hell's Angels and MS 13.
Topic: Prison Food
Question: In what ways is food important in prisons?
Thesis: The type of food and vocational chef training provided to inmates has tremendous impacts on post-incarceration release and on moral of prisons while incarcerated.

OPTION 2 - IF YOU WANT TO CHOOSE FORENSICS
A video of Mr. Fitton explaining the project if you would like.
1. For Students who want to move on and try something that is not prison related, but want to further explore our earlier forensics unit, here is a project for you!
2. Read through the Inquiry Process Handout! It may help you as you start your project.
3. Read the Handout Below which is the Inquiry Project Assignment! Create a crime scene? Maybe a Podcast*? Maybe a true Crime Screenplay? Use whatever our strengths and talents are in order to further your understanding of Forensics!
*Please note, if you completed one for Mrs. Kirmis, you can't use the same one for me - that is plagiarism - you can however, make a new one.
