Fake News UnitStatement of Inquiry: Understanding the systems that create our media content can help us understand how they represent different cultures and perspectives and help us to better understand the world we live in.

1. Hook - Let's Look at Some Fake News Blunders of 2018

3. Give students the CBC fake news article.
Options: A: Read first section together (read up to “What kinds of Misinformation and Disinformation are out there” as a class.) Then give groups sections of the text in groups and a mini white board/window writers, sections of chalkboard. Then they have to paraphrase the main idea and three supporting facts. Will then find a version of that online – share back with class as expert groups.
-Do first one together to model summarization
Option B: Put a version of each type of fake news around the room and students needs to identify and explain why (laminate articles/videos/facts). Could do half article one day or another day.
Option C: Make a handout with each item on it with brief definition and put examples on sheet and students have to match.
-Teach students about reliability of sources – need a handout.
