Student Empowerment
Students are empowered to come up with their own Final Assessment.
Each class can choose a different culminating activity to demonstrate their knowledge of key learnings from throughout our time together.
One that meets the needs and interests of each diverse group.
Past classes have opted to do:
1. Class formal professional debates on topics of their choosing; using a recognized debate format and doing extensive research.
2. Creating their own scripted trial in a google doc and then acting it out in class. (One class put Shrek on trial).
3. Creating their own murder mystery / forensic crime scene / police scenario and then having a trial based on that.
4. Any new options students want?

OPTION 1 - Debate
Using the format from the debate unit below, students chose topics they were interested in (Gun Control; Prison Reform; Capital Punishment) and debated while the rest of the class watched.

Option 2 - Scripted Mock Trial
Students plan and script out a trial (could be of a celebrity or something else). Create a class google doc. Then act out the trial. Should demonstrate key course concepts and vocabulary.

Option 3 - Murder Mystery / Forensic Crime Scene / Unscripted Trial
Students will need to construct a crime scene, choose roles for the trial and learn how to properly conduct themselves according to real trial expectations. Students will create the evidence (video footage / photos / character witness / police interrogations) and the plot line. They will run the entire thing with guidance.
Often we do R V Skywalker as a mock trial first. To show how a trial runs. See handout from law education society, below.
1. Distribute Handout - write roles on the side board.
2. Students brainstorm the crime and the characters they will be. See Rubric.

Watch these videos as students prep the police scenario, forensic crime scene, evidence and trial. Show a few as the lesson naturally lends itself to showing them (opening arguments, closing arguments, courtroom theatrics, objections)
