Here is a podcast about the topic: How Do You Connect With Someone You Just Met? - Freakonomics
Creating Connection - A Pillar of Health
This is an exciting unit where we get to examine the art of telling a good story and then using photography to complement the story. It will also help you build the conversation and vulnerability skills to forge connection.
1. We will start by viewing some photo stories to showcase the power of photography. https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/2019/04/stunning-wildlife-pictures-around-world/ https://www.nationalgeographic.com/travel/lists/activities/pictures-of-islands-great-for-adventure-around-the-world/ https://www.nationalgeographic.com/culture/2019/04/tree-planting-rite-of-passage-young-canadians/ 2. We watched a segment of "The Clues to a great Story." - We will not watch the entire clip since there is some swearing in a section at the start. However, it does a great job of explaining storytelling. |

Vulnerability - The "Why" behind our assignment.
Mr. Fitton began by showing a Keynote slideshow on the power of risk-taking, growth and vulnerability. Available in class. We then viewed one of the most popular Ted Talks in History - Vulnerability by Brene Brown to go over how Vulnerability drives connection and is necessary for flourishing.
While we watch the video - students will write down 3-4 takeaways that we will share out as a class. "What are the most powerful statements Brown made." "What most resonated with you."
This assignment is an exercise in trust and vulnerability.

3. We will look at our upcoming Photography Assignment based on the work of Brandon Stanton - creator of the "Humans of New York" blog / Instagram /Facebook Page. See assignment below. Mr. Fitton read and showed a couple of examples from "Humans" and "Humans of New York" - two books available in our library.
-Co-Create Criteria as a class. How will we be assessing this work? Discuss as a class the Core Competencies and the Curricular Competencies that we are meeting. Go over Rubric. We can also use parts of the new Ministry Reporting Order Scale to assess.
Assignment: Basically, students will interview/walk with a classmate and ask deep questions and then take a photo and complete a HONY style writeup. See assignments and rubric below.

5. Each student will now reflect on what questions they might add to get someone to open up. We will share them on the board.
6. We will do a fishbowl where a member of the class interviews the teacher, or the teacher interviews a member of the class with the whole class sitting around. The interviewer may wish to face the board to see the list of questions.
7. Post-interview feedback from the class - what did the interviewer do well; what could have improved the interview?
8. Assignment instructions; photography mini-lesson. We will watch a youtube video on iphone photography: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhGsFzAZ71Y At this point, students will go out and take 5 photos using some of the techniques from the tutorial. We will then share as class.
