Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Have have learned about Maslow already, but let's broaden and deepen our understanding with Simon Sinek's spin on the concept.
Finding Your WhySimon Sinek Discusses the idea of the Golden Circle. The first video is his origin story. Then we will watch the third most viewed Ted Talk of all time, "How Great Leaders Inspire Action."
We will listen to his Ted Talk. We will do the following assignment to guide us in a discussion. This will help us make our understanding more concrete and we will have a robust discussion on the content.
Hook - Show the following PPT and ask students "What do you think when you see the image of each person."
We will read out pages from "Finding your Why" by Simon Sinek
Forward: Paragraph 1 Introduction: Pages 1 - 4 These pages provide a great example using a powerful story of a steel salesman - who has a deep sense of Why - even if it wasn't entirely clear to him. Activity - Finding Your WhyA Quick note - that this is best done in a process where a partner listens and helps out. Basically, we are too close to our memories and we need an objective third party to be able to see the threads that connect these items.

Mr. Fitton will conduct a "Fishbowl" of the Activity with a student or another adult, or they will do the process with him as a demonstration. Students then provide input on the process. What worked well, what would they do differently? How do you make a person feel comfortable enough to share?
Last year we had newspaper reporter Joe Fries arrive to meet with our class on the day we did this and we fishbowl interviewed him using Sinek's strategy and helped him unravel a Golden Thread in his own life that he had not noticed. (Article Below) Perhaps next year we could invite someone in, or help someone else who is interested, "Find their Why. "
