Unit on Storytelling and Photography
This is an exciting unit where we get to examine the art of telling a good story and then using photography to tell a story.
1. We will start by viewing some photo stories to showcase the power of photography.

2. We compiled a list on the board of elements of a good story. Students revealed that there are many elements to telling a good story. We also discussed what bad storytellers do.
3. We watched a segment of "The Clues to a great Story." - We will not watch the entire clip since there is some swearing in a section at the start. However, it does a great job of explaining storytelling.
4. Watch a small video on Oral Storytelling; explain how many cultures respect the storyteller (like today we have Hollywood telling us stories)

5. Future Assignment: We will have to tell a good story to members of our class. We could do a field trip and do it in the woods with a campfire if students would like. Let's decide if we want to have this graded based on criteria we come up with; or if this could be a hook to our upcoming Photography Storytelling Assignment.
- Here is a website with some tips on Storytelling: https://www.storyarts.org/classroom/usestories/storyrubric.html
6. We will look at our upcoming Photography Assignment based on the work of Brandon Stanton - creator of the "Humans of New York" blog / Instagram /Facebook Page. See assignment below.
-Co-Create Criteria as a class. How will we be assessing this work? Discuss as a class the Core Competencies and the Curricular Competencies that we are meeting. Go over Rubric.
Basically, students will interview/walk with a classmate and ask deep questions and then take a photo and complete a HONY style writeup.

8. Students will be given time with a computer to prepare their pictures. Will they post to Instagram with a story? Or should we all put our photo in a work document and then write our interview below it? Decide as a class. Or do we post it on our own e-portfolio
9. End the unit by giving students a chance to work on a fireside story if they want. Or some sort of oral storytelling (can make a youtube video, a video, an in-class story, etc).
