1. We will begin by looking at a brief history of the 1920s through a couple of youtube clips which summarize key social, political and economic trends and facts from the decade.
These will help us develop a better understanding of the time period whereupon we will be able to apply that information to our films from this era.

3. View Cinderella Man
4. Discuss Cinderella Man as a class. Is there anything as a class, we wish to emphasize? We will discuss how the film participates in the narrative of "pulling yourself up by your bootstraps" and how Americans believe in the American Dream of Hard Work and the ability to come back. The entire film is a metaphor for the nation brought to its knees by the depression and fighting to get back to its former glory.
5. Discussion activity. See document below which contains 41 discussion questions. Questions will be cut up and 4 questions will be placed on ten round tables in the library. At the tables, students will have 5 minutes to discuss the questions in groups of 3. We will then switch groups and questions every 5 minutes until students have done at least 20 questions. It's like "Speed Dating" discussions.

Citizen Kane
Citizen Kane has been called the "Best Film of all Time" for many reasons. The background of the story itself is just as interesting as the new style of film that Welles was creating.
We will start with the background of the film with a small backgrounder youtube clip. Here are two.

Prior the film, we will learn about Camera angles and shots, since this film features a lot of different camera shots and utilizes focus. It was groundbreaking in its time. Below is the worksheet. However, we will also do a mini lesson in Camera shots.

1. We hooked kids by introducing them to the cool new skills they would be learning --- use of Video Cameras and iPads. This included watching a small segment of "The Matrix" (Neo and Mr. Smith Fight Scene). While we watched, we told students to watch it based on the camera shots and angles.
QUESTIONS: -How long did most shots last? -Why change camera angles/shots -How many shots/angles were there (approx) 2. We did a small slideshow demonstration on types of angles / shots. See file below. If not, can view parts of the online slideshare linked below as well. OR PARTS OF: http://www.slideshare.net/mrgrasso/examples-of-video-shots-and-composition

We will look at doing an assignment that involves us doing some filming so that we can gain an appreciation for Citizen's Kane's cinematography while paying homage to his work. This is up to the class. We could look at creating a short film of their own choosing, or I could provide structure. Students can use their own phones if they have editing software, or we could use the iPads. Our goal is to participate in the groundbreaking history of using the types of shots and camera angles that made Citizen Kane extraordinary as a piece of cinema.
Some possibilities.
1. Bouncing Ball Films (Often used in the past at film schools.) You have to follow a bouncing ball on a journey.
2. Mr. Van Camps idea. You have to ask a teacher for an extension.
3. Any video of short duration.
Below are a couple of films that show different camera angles to create effect.
