4. Reviewed World War One battle tactics by making the desks into trenches and throwing paper balls at each other. Then, some pre-designated students performed Blitzkrieg when asked by coming out of the trenches by surprise and bombing students with plastic balls
5. We discussed the main elements of Blitzkrieg (surprise, speed and coordinated attack with trucks, planes, tanks and soldiers) and how it changed the style of warfare and made World War Two take place over a much larger space than World War One 6. To get a full picture of World War Two we watched John Greene's Crash Course in History 7. Watched WW2 in Seven Minutes |
7. Matrix notes on why WW2 happened and the beginning of the war
Notes:
Causes:
1. Failure of Appeasement (and Hitler’s aggression)
2. Failure of the League of Nations (Eithopia/China)
3. Lebensraum (Hitler’s “Living space” in the East for Germans)
4. Unresolved issues from WWI (Treaty of Versailles)
5. Germany invades Poland = trigger

Canada Declares War
-Britain declares war Sept. 3, 1939
-Sept. 8, King calls Parliament, only J.S.Woodsworth opposes going to war, declare Sept. 10 but tell Britain no conscription
-many volunteers (good paying job, remember they just had a 10 year long depression)
-first role is BCATP, which is to train British pilots in the prairies (why? Canada far from war fronts, lots of space, way for us to help without losing our own soldiers)
-first part of war there is a period where very little happens on Western Front. It was expected Germany would invade France, but instead they turned attention to Eastern Europe first. This period was called the Phony War lasted until May 1940
-Hitler takes all of mainland Europe with Blitzkreig, soon Br/Fr troop pushed to Dunkirk beach
-May 26, 1940 Mass evacuation of Allied troops from mainland Europe (340 000 by June 4 on beaches of Dunkirk)
-June 22 France surrenders to Germany, Britain alone in war, now need more help from Canada
-“Operation Sealion” Germany prepares to take Britain
-June 10, 1940-May 1941 Massive bombing campaign of Southern England (53 straight days in London) à London Blitz
-Although Hitler was initially successful, his concentration on London Civilians (Hitler’s 1st major mistake) allowed RAF to recover. With help from 80 Canadian pilots, able to force Hitler to give up. During Battle, Canada supplies Britain with Ships traveling the Atlantic
-Hitler then turns attention to Soviet Union (Operation Barbarossa)à 2nd major mistake
-First action for Canada will be December 1941 in Hong Kong
8. Started the Documentary Canada's Role in World War Two, answered 5 questions. This is a documentary not available online. Must see Mr. Fitton to watch it, if you missed out.

Lesson: Review
1. The Class Reviewed by watching "WW2 - Canada's Role"
2. Students asked questions they needed from their Movie Viewing Sheet
3. The Class Played "Review Musical Chairs." Under each chair was a question from the unit that could be testable. Students played musical chairs, when they got "out" they had the chance to answer a question taped under the chair that had a question on it. If they got it correct, they were able to stay in. If not, they went on the outside edge of the circle. If the student who got "out" did not answer the question, it went to those who were on the side edge - they could thus, get back into the game.
4. We played "Fear Factor" with actual WW1 foods.
