Welcome to the Media Studies Unit of Communications 11/12. This unit is meant to compliment the Non-Fiction unit, especially the last few lessons on Supersize me and Body Images as well as Banksy's Dismaland Video. In this unit, we are going to become Deconstructionists who critically examine the world of Media Advertising around us.
1. We will start by reading a recent article in the National Post --- about Curfews. Then, read Penticton's recent council meeting where they discussed the issue.

2. Students will provide their own examples of famous slogans and see if the class can get them. Link this to Supersize Me and how the people can re-state the jingle for McDonalds, but forget how to Pledge Allegiance.
3. Why study the media? Obviously if we know ad slogans better than literature than it definitely permeates our lives and we should be aware of it, and it is a billion dollar industry; however, there are 2 other reasons.
The 2 most important reasons:
a. Part of your exam requires that you design an ad or pamphlet. (show the example here and discuss).
b. We will now read an essay that will explain the other reasons we should study the media
4. Take notes on why study media from the document below.

Thursday, December 10th - Tying it all together...
1. We watched a Ted Talk by an Advertising Executive who talks about how advertising works and how it is about creativity. This was meant as well to show students that they may end up working in advertising as a career. We also stopped periodically to go over critical vocabulary and to discuss his examples (the veil, we stopped at the segment on the train and before he gave his examples, we explained how we would improve the trip; we discussed the potato example and how margarine did the same thing; students loved the "diamond shred dies."
