WW 1 - A Look From Both Sides
In this course we will examine the cataclysmic impact of WW1 from several angles. This year, we will view "Passchendaele" for the Canadian perspective, "The Red Baron" for the German Perspective and "Gallipoli" for the Australian Perspective.
Our goal is to develop historical empathy and critical thinking skills as we examine the war from a variety of angles.
We will also review a section of the Novel "All Quiet on the Western Front."

2. We will view two brief Powerpoint outlining key information as well as a document that outlines the first assignment for Passchendaele. Mr. Fitton will print off the powerpoint with room for student notes on the sides. Use these documents during your future discussion on the film as a way to link the history we've studied to the movies.

3. Watch a Virtual Reality video - students go on their cellphones and go to either of these two videos and walk around/move phone to see a VR experience. Please note - must be done in the youtube app, not off my website, or it won't work on the phones. Can also use "google cardboard" or equivalent.

3. Watch all above Trailers and decide which films we will study. Then remind students that they need to link the history they've learned to the film for the discussion. Mr. Fitton will conduct a brief historical lecture on WW1 and its causes.
OR STUDENTS WILL CHOOSE WHICH FILM THEY WISH TO STUDY AS A CLASS.
Many of these films (Like Warhorse and Passchendaele deal with contemporary issues, like PTSD. Let's take a look at a National Geographic Special on PTSD: https://www.nationalgeographic.com/healing-soldiers/
-Flyboys deals with a contemporary issue of Racism.

Gallipoli
Time Permitting, we may choose to look at the Gallipoli Campaign as a chance to examine the war from additional perspectives.
As a way to envision the great war, here's a historian who actually goes out and lives it in his back yard.
