Unit on Storytelling and Photography
This is an exciting unit where we get to examine the art of telling a good story and then using photography to tell a story.
1. Hook: Mr. Fitton brought a fireplace to school and students went out back and lit a fire. Mr. Fitton told a ghost story, a funny story and a serious story. Students then returned to class. We will end the unit the same way, with a chance for the students to tell a fireside story. (Some did on that day). The rest of the unit helps us scaffold.
2. We compiled a list on the board of elements of a good story. Students revealed that there are many elements to telling a good story. We also discussed what bad storytellers do.
3. We watched a segment of "The Clues to a great Story." - We will not watch the entire clip since there is some swearing in a section at the start. However, it does a great job of explaining storytelling.
4. Watch a small video on Oral Storytelling; explain how many cultures respect the storyteller (like today we have Hollywood telling us stories)

5. Future Assignment: We will have to tell a good story to members of our class. We could do a field trip and do it in the woods with a campfire if students would like. Let's decide if we want to have this graded based on criteria we come up with; or if this could be a hook to our upcoming Photography Storytelling Assignment.
- Here is a website with some tips on Storytelling: https://www.storyarts.org/classroom/usestories/storyrubric.html
6. We will look at our upcoming Photography Assignment based on the work of Brandon Stanton - creator of the "Humans of New York" blog / Instagram /Facebook Page. See assignment below.
-Co-Create Criteria as a class. How will we be assessing this work? Discuss as a class the Core Competencies and the Curricular Competencies that we are meeting.

1. Look at a youtube video of famous photographs and discuss the importance of photography. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssgjF3yp8mE
2. Examples from HONY of how you can approach you assignment. http://thoughtcatalog.com/kim-quindlen/2015/06/15-beautiful-heartening-inspiring-humans-of-new-york-posts/ 3. The Man Behind Hony: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bcm6kwWv09o (3:11 long) – What questions do students have? 4. Watch a youtube clip about Humans of New York and how he asks questions https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPxzlGPrM3A (3:28-5:45; 11:09-14:44) 5. Assignment instructions; photography mini-lesson. We will watch a youtube video on iphone photography: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhGsFzAZ71Y At this point, students will go out and take 5 photos using some of the techniques from the tutorial. We will then share our photos as a class. -First - co-design a rubric as a group. How should Mr. Fitton grade our assignment (Exceeding Expectations, Meeting Expectations, Minimally Meeting Expectations, Not Yet Meeting Expectations --- these will be our categories and we will populate the columns with details to help us grade).
6. Take photographs and interview our subjects. (Have some in mind)
7. Create a photo essay on computer, slideshow, paper, imovie, Instagram, blog or any app that allows you to create your masterpiece. Share out (in small groups or large groups). |
* Provide students with the whiteboards; in groups they need to write down how he gets people to allow him to photograph them; also what are some key questions he asks and what are key questions they might want to ask someone.
How does Brandon Stanton get people to allow him to take photos? What questions does he ask (just watch from (3:28-5:45; 11:09-14:44)
Then watch "Shoot Like a Pro with your iPhone).
*Provide whiteboards again - students write down 3 tips they learned. Must go out and take shots.

8. Students will be given time in the computer lab to prepare their pictures. Will they post to Instagram with a story? Or should we all put our photo in a work document and then write our interview below it? Decide as a class. Or do we post it on our own e-portfolio
9. End the unit by giving students a chance to work on a fireside story if they want. Or some sort of oral storytelling (can make a youtube video, a video, an in-class story, etc).
