Lesson 1 - December 8th - Why Study Myths + A Look at Creation Stories
1. Hand out the Mythology people search and get them to complete it in pairs. First pair done correctly can have a prize. It is like Mythology Bingo!
2. Class discussion: Why study mythology. Showed two video clips:
After we watch these two clips, can we add to the reasons we've created? Watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qf2GkX_t7B8 "Why study the Greeks - watch from 0:20 - 6:02
Then watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mDD0seIeHY (Most interesting Man in the World) and have class try to pick out what parts of a Mythological Hero he personifies. Why? Shows as well that Mythology has a legacy that endures to this day.

2. Hand out allusions to mythology package and get students to pick out 2-3 interesting ones to them. Go around the room and get them to share an example. Tell them they each must share a different one, so that was why they picked out 2-3, to make sure an allusion wasn’t repeated.

3. Fill out the Mythology Overview notes with them on the overhead (Key attached) The notes are on the back of the people search.
4. Handout “In Context” textbooks (on back shelf) and turn to page 154 and read “backgrounder” the Greek creation myth with them. Then, show them how to retell the myth in words and pictures (I have left my example, start with them and then let them do their own). Tell them that they need to retell the whole story (key details) in words and pictures.
-We did this as a class with a chart drawn by Mr. Fitton. No electronic copy.
5. Have them pick a creation story and complete the same task (using words and pictures, capture the main 10 events of the story). Then, find 2 similarities between the myth (theirs and the Greek one) and one difference.
-The goal here is to learn to summarize, paraphrase and convey an idea clearly both visually and verbally.
6. We concluded class by watching a review of Greek Creation myths from the TV show "Horrible Histories." Please see below.
7. Next class will be spent reading and writing our creation story representation.

Lesson 2 - December 9th - Creation Myths
1. Add to their reasons on why we should study myths:
-All of our hero and hero qualities come from Greek myths,
-so does the structure for our stories, the themes for our stories, many of our monsters, symbols and many of our explanations for how the world is the way it is 6. Explain the three types of myth and get them to write them down:
Creation Myth: How something was created or came to be
Battle Myth: Clash between good and evil or two opposing groups, result of original evil being let out into the world (Pandora, Garden of Eden)
Journey Myth: Hero sets out to fix something wrong in his world, must leave home to fix the problem. Always learns something in the process.
Throughout the unit we will be focussing on the concept of the Mythological Hero - we will end with making comic of "The Odyssey" Then compare it to a film involving a mythological hero.
5. Review the Greek Myth of creation with them and show them an example Matrix.
Gaea/Uranus create universe out of Chaos. Have 6 normal kids and 6 ugly kids (ugly kids, Cyclops and kids with 50 heads and 100 hands) – they are locked up under earth. Not because Gaea wants them locked up – cuz Uranus wants them. Two titans marry – Rhea and Cronus – Gaea gets mad and wants Cronus to kill Uranus (dad) because she is mad that her other kids = locked up. Cronus goes after dad with a sickle. He cuts off Uranus’ genitals – body up in sky, genitals into ocean – creates Aphrodite. Cronus and Rhea have 12 kids – they become to Olympians. Cronus gets too scared that he will will be overthrown, that he eats all of his kids. But Rhea feeds him a rock in a blanket instead of Zeus – who she then sends to live with sea nymphs. When Zeus is old enough he comes back and Rhea gives him a poison to feed to Cronus – makes him puke up all of the 12 olympians. He dies. Because Zeus saved them, they say he will be king, but they agree to divide realms of earth between them so no one is afraid of being overthrown.
6. Discuss some similarities between creation myths/stories no matter what culture they come from:
-world created out of chaos/nothing/darkness. As humans we want to make sense of the world.
-either humans, animals, or nature created next depending on the cultures values
-Explain how nature came to be ; explain natural phenomena.
7. Students work on their own creation story matrix assignment. Due for 10 marks at end of next class.

2. Read the Trojan War together, Have them list 6 of the main points. (A Short Version - Mr. Fitton has photocopies).
Judgment of Paris: Wedding on Olympia. All gods invited except Eris (goddess of discord). She wants to ruin the wedding. Throws a golden apple into crowd that says “to the fairest.” Athena/Afhrodite/Hera fight over it. Ask Zeus who is the fairest (who does apple belong to). Zeus won’t touch that one with a ten foot pole.
-Gets Shepard named Paris (who is actually a prince abandoned at Birth, because prophesized he will cause downfall of troy.) Zeus gets him as he is the most handsome man in world.
-Hera will make him wealth, Athena says will make rich/smart/powerful, Afphrodite says will give beautiful woman as wife. Aphrodite wins and pisses off other two.
-A few years later Paris goes looking for the woman, ends up in troy winning a contest of strength. Finds out he is a prince. Goes to live with dad – Priam in Troy. Falls in love with Helen on a trip to Greece (meet up with Agamennon a king and Menalaus – who is married to Helen – most beautiful woman.)
-He takes her away as he won the deal earlier. She is under a spell from afphrodite and goes with him.
3. Show the following scenes from Troy: We focussed on Troy last year in Comm, so this year we will focus on what happens after the Trojan War
-37 minutes-44 minutes (Ships coming on beach)
-1:10:00-1:19:00 minutes (Paris vs. Menelaus)
-2:16-2:32 (Sacking and burning of Troy, Death of Achilles, Odysseus buries the dead)

4. Show a clip from “Horrible Histories” as well - goes over Achille's heel and the allusion we still use today.
5. Show "Trojan War Song" and put up the Lyrics as well. Explain how this is a great way to summarize, like they did with their picture matrixes.
6. Finish their creation myths – they should have their matrixes completed and submitted.

Lessons: Finishing "The Odyssey" and watching a "O Brother, Where Art Thou"
|
1. Students will be given a handout on the steps to producing a comic life project. They must partner up and we will read instructions as a class.
2. Students will complete the handout and take photographs for their comic life project in group of 3-4. (See handout for information - "Steps for Comic." 3. Students will go to the computer lab and produce, then print their copy of the comic. We will then take each student project and put them together to create our own comic book. 4. The Class will view the film "O Brother Where Art Though" as a way to review "the Odyssey" and we will connect to how we began the unit. We began the unit by talking about how Mythology has had a huge impact on western culture and continues to do so through hollywood cinema, products, business names, etc. |
